We have a lot of fun in Focus Times. Pastor Cal tries his best to communicate the wonders of God’s Word in ways that the campers can understand and connect with. The theme for the Focus Times this year is going to be “Wonder.” We want to help the campers (and adults!) stand in wonder at God. We begin by marveling at God’s creation and noticing what it reveals about Him. We also want to help the campers (and adults!) to wonder what this remarkable God might want to do with their lives.
Camp begins on Monday by looking at Genesis 1:1-19, Psalm 19:1-6 and John 1:1-5. We’ll be looking out into space – figuratively speaking – by noticing the size of the universe in which we live. Our memory verse is Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
On Tuesday, we’ll look around at us at some of the amazing creatures that God has made. As Romans 1:20 tells us, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” We’ll memorize this verse while marveling at the intricacies of the creatures God created.
Wednesday’s Focus Time turns our attention inward. It doesn’t take too much time looking into our own bodies before we realize that the Psalmist had it all right: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14) The goal is simple: have the campers realize that this verse speaks of them!
We’ll take a dramatic turn on Thursday as we begin to focus on the future and wonder together what God might have in store for us. The Psalmist continues in 139:16b: “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” While we can’t know for sure when we memorize this verse what those plans are, we can begin to dream!
Our Friday Focus Time will close out the week by wondering, “What happened?” God is wonderful; He shows that in His creation; He wraps that up in the potential He places in us. So why is our world and sometimes our lives such a mess? We’ll focus on Romans 3:23-24, “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
